What is Holiness?
Holiness, a very misunderstood word. Quite often we refer to enlightened saints as holy men. But what exactly does it mean? Do we tend to uplift them to a pedestal simply because it makes us believe that we cannot reach that level? Us, mere mortals ?
When a title is bestowed upon any person, we immediately create a rift between both parties, a gap. No matter what it is that we say, be it Sir, Master,Your honor? All this sounds familiar?
It is surely a form of giving respect to the other person but it also leads us to psychologically believe that now that there is a gap between us, its OK for me to be the way I am !! Its like we are justifying our incapability to achieve that level ourselves. When we refer to a person as Holy, it essentially makes that person a god like figure.
Holiness has got nothing to do with the external appearances, or even with miracles. It is essentially an internal quality.
What is this internal reality?
We should realize that in actuality, our whole lives we are “busy” with something. It takes us away from our own selves. We are always “outside” ourselves. Our desire to “achieve” something or the other keeps us occupied. We tend to accept this as a given and very few are able to go back from this illusion. Coming back to oneself is what holiness is all about. Being spiritually and physically healthy is Holiness.
Renouncing all worldly things will only make you even more frustrated and confused. A life which is meant to be understood, lived, enjoyed should not be wasted by renunciation. When we recognize ourselves by our wholeness, our peace and our bliss. That is what Holiness is all about.
Every person is meant to live their own lives, not measure their lives with the quality of other people’s lives. That would be a fundamentally false method of looking at yourself. In order to attain wholeness and holiness, you must introspect and realize the truth.
Holiness lies within you. Its attaining inner peace.
